The Importance of Being a Tangent, Part Deux
I recently wrote an anthem for Adriel Hampton’s CA10 campaign. And by anthem, I mean I wrote lyrics to Kanye’s “Heartless”. It all started when Adriel twittered that he would work relentlessly to help his (if elected) constituents. Meghan (his campaign manager) twittered back that Relentless was the word. Unable to help myself, I twittered: “Relentless is the word…its got groove its got meaning”. And then, out of hubris or insomnia or just plain humor, I said I could probably take that whole song and make it about Adriel’s campaign. And then I one upped myself, and said I could even do it with “Heartless”. Adriel challenged me, and I accepted. I wrote the lyrics, and now we are having a “rap contest” to lay down the tracks…if you want to try…. check it out here.
Anyway, I was telling my friends about it, and was just really proud of myself…and they all asked the same question. Why? Why do you care? Why are you getting involved? What’s so great about Adriel? It was hard for my to answer in a clear and concise manner. Why do I support him? I knew the answer, but was having trouble putting it into words.
This morning, whilst brushing my teeth, the answer came to me. I am a firm believer in doing. If I see something that needs to be done or a void that needs to be filled – I will step right up and fill it. This goes for mundane things – like three high school boys from Montreal for the Sabbath - as well as for serious things. I am of the feeling that one shouldn’t just sit there opining and complaining, one should DO SOMETHING about it. (though, I am not quite up on my high horse – after all - I have been guilty of not doing.)
Be proactive.
If you don’t like the status quo, do what you can to change it. Its like watching a kid being ridiculed and bullied at school, and doing nothing to stop it. Yeah, you weren’t the bully, but you stood there and let it happen.
You were silent.
And sometimes being silent, or complacent, or ranting at your dinner table to your family and then going about your business, is just as bad as committing the egregious act.
If you see a void, fill it.
If something is broken, fix it.
Why do I support Adriel? Why does a girl from NYC care so much about getting him elected for the CA10 Congressional Seat?
The answer is simple. Adriel is a doer.
